Construction NVQ FAQs: Level 1 Award
How does the Highfield Level 1 Award work?
These construction NVQ FAQs begin with the Highfield Level 1 Health and Safety Award, a one-day course for people starting work in construction. Unlike an NVQ, it is not assessed through ongoing workplace competence.
During the one-day course, you will learn about essential construction site health and safety, including identifying potential risks and hazards, safe working practices, and how to prevent or manage common workplace risks.
On completion of the course, you can book your CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) Test at your nearest Pearson test centre. Once you successfully pass the test, you can apply for your Green CSCS Labourer Card, which is valid for 5 years.
Does an NVQ expire?
Once an NVQ qualification has been achieved, it does not expire. Much like a GCSE or degree, once you have completed your NVQ, you do not need to resit or renew the qualification.
However, certain cards and schemes associated with construction work, such as CSCS cards, do have expiry dates and may require you to meet the relevant requirements when renewing them.
Can you fail an NVQ?
You cannot fail an NVQ in the same way you would fail qualifications such as GCSEs or A-Levels. NVQs are primarily assessed on your ability to demonstrate competence in your job role rather than through traditional written examinations.
Assessment is generally carried out through evidence gathered in the workplace, with your assessor confirming that you can consistently perform the required tasks to the required standard.
If you are not yet ready to demonstrate a particular competency, your assessor can provide guidance on what needs to be improved and give you the opportunity to complete the required work or provide further evidence.
Is funding available towards an NVQ?
Depending on your circumstances and the qualification you are looking to complete, you may be eligible for funding towards your NVQ. Funding availability can vary depending on factors such as your employment status, employer, age, location and the specific qualification.
Current funding options may include:
CITB Skills & Training Fund – grant support that CITB registered employers may be able to claim towards the cost of training and developing their workforce, subject to current CITB eligibility and funding arrangements. Eligibility is confirmed by CITB, not by EJC.
NVQ Level 2 FAQs
How does NVQ level 2 work?
For NVQ Level 2 and above they are assessed in various ways via a portfolio of evidence; building content with evidence of what you have achieved at work, and also by observation of your assessor. An observation will involve the Assessor watching you while you work to check the competency of the tasks you are completing.
The learner will need to produce evidence that they are competent to meet the NVQ standards, and once satisfied the assessor will sign off each unit that makes up the full NVQ qualification title. The assessor will also test the learner’s knowledge to ensure they fully demonstrate competence in the workplace.
Assessors will evaluate the learners performance against the standards as they learn, looking at what they have achieved and how they should go about completing all units until the NVQ is ready to be assessed as competent against a whole NVQ. This system is right for learners who already have skills and are competent and want to increase them, but also for those starting from the beginning to improve their career prospects
How do I get an NVQ Level 2 Construction Operations?
To achieve a Level 2 NVQ in construction operations, learners will need to be working in an environment where construction is taking place in order to perform the necessary training. Once enrolled on their qualification, they will gain practical and theoretical training needed to work full-time in con op’s.
Over the course of the NVQ, learners will be tasked with displaying their competency of performing con op’s work through practical and written assessments, as well as displaying a portfolio of evidence of their work. Successful completion may support an application for the appropriate CSCS skilled worker card, subject to current CSCS requirements.
Is funding available towards an NVQ?
Depending on your circumstances, funding or grant support may be available towards the cost of an NVQ. Availability varies depending on factors such as your employment status, your employer, your age, your location and the specific qualification. NVQ Level 3 FAQs
Can you do NVQ 3 without NVQ 2?
Yes, in many cases, it is possible to pursue an NVQ Level 3 without having completed NVQ Level 2. NVQ qualifications are designed to assess a person’s competence in a specific vocational area, and the levels indicate the complexity and depth of the skills involved. While some individuals may progress from NVQ Level 2 to Level 3, it’s not a strict requirement. Entry requirements can vary, and individuals with relevant experience or prior qualifications may directly enter NVQ Level 3. How do I get NVQ Level 3 in construction?
To attain NVQ Level 3 in construction, you typically need to be employed in a role such as a site supervisor or assistant site manager on a construction trade site. The specific steps may involve:
Employment in Relevant Role: Ensure you are working in a position that aligns with the NVQ Level 3 requirements, such as a site supervisor or assistant site manager.
Course Enrolment: Enrol in the NVQ Level 3 course, commonly known as the Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision.

As a typical indication, learners completing the Highfield Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision (Construction) take in the region of 10–16 weeks while continuing in their normal site role. Experienced supervisors who can readily supply workplace evidence often complete sooner.
Is a Level 3 qualification equivalent to a degree?

NVQ Level 6 FAQs
What is a Level 6 qualification?
Level 6 describes the level of a qualification on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), not the type of qualification. A range of very different qualifications sit at Level 6, including:
ordinary or honours degree
degree apprenticeship
graduate certificates and diplomas
Level 6 awards and certificates
Level 6 NVQ diplomas
A Level 6 qualification indicates the holder can work at a senior, managerial level within their discipline. It does not mean every Level 6 qualification is the same qualification.
Is NVQ Level 6 equivalent to a degree?
It sits at the same level as a degree on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), but it is not the same qualification as a university degree.
The Highfield Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Management (Building and Civil Engineering) (RQF) is a vocational, competence-based qualification. It is achieved by demonstrating that you can already manage construction work to the required standard in your own workplace — assessed through workplace evidence, observation, witness testimony and professional discussion.
A university degree is an academic qualification achieved through taught study and academic assessment. The two are recognised at the same RQF level and are valued for different things: a Level 6 NVQ evidences proven occupational competence on site, and is widely recognised by principal contractors and clients for exactly that reason.
How long does it take to do an NVQ Level 6?
There is no fixed completion time for an NVQ. Because an NVQ assesses the competence you demonstrate through your normal work, the timescale depends on your existing competence, your workplace role, the evidence available to you and the assessment requirements of the qualification.
As an indication only, learners completing the Highfield Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Management typically take in the region of 16–24 weeks alongside managing live projects. Learners who are already performing the role and can readily supply workplace evidence generally progress more quickly.
